Beyond the Basics –
A Workplace First Aid Series

Every workplace approaches first aid differently, and most already have strong foundations in place.
But when something unexpected happens, people often realise they need more than just a certificate — they need clarity, confidence and practical understanding.

Beyond the Basics explores the small but important steps that help first aiders understand their role, know their equipment, and feel confident responding to incidents in their own workplace. It’s about building capability, supporting your team, and making first aid feel more manageable day-to-day.

Beyond the Basics — Part 1

Why Tick-Box First Aid Training Leaves Workplaces Unprepared

Many workplaces tick the box when it comes to first aid. Staff attend the course, certificates are issued, and compliance appears covered.

But when a real emergency happens?

People freeze.
Kits aren’t suited to the environment.
Staff aren’t clear on their role.
Scenarios never reflected the actual workplace.
Some have never even seen their first aid kit or AED — or know where the nearest one is.

This is where the difference between minimum training and effective, confidence-building training becomes obvious.

Why Tick-Box Training Isn’t Enough

Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA), employers must ensure first aid arrangements are effective in providing immediate and appropriate treatment — not just that someone holds a certificate.

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends CPR refreshers every 12 months because skills fade quickly without practice.

Without ongoing learning, toolbox or team talks, and workplace-specific scenarios, both confidence and preparedness drop.

Minimum training may meet compliance on paper, but it rarely translates into skilled responses when it matters most.

What Effective First Aid Training Looks Like

✔ Contextualised

Training that reflects your workplace hazards, environment and the tasks your staff perform.

✔ Scenario-based

Hands-on practice using situations your team may realistically face.

✔ Clarity on equipment

Staff know where first aid kits and AEDs are located and understand what is inside the kits.

✔ Clear responsibilities

Everyone understands their role well before an incident occurs.

Simple Ways to Strengthen Your First Aid System

  • Review your training schedule

  • Run short, practical toolbox or team talks

  • Discuss responsibilities clearly

  • Check first aid kits and AED access

  • Use scenarios based on your actual tasks and risks

  • Provide refreshers between formal courses

These small, consistent improvements help staff feel more prepared — and make a significant difference when seconds matter.
