Low Voltage Rescue and CPR training for electrical workers in South Australia

Is your electrical team's training current, or are you relying on certificates that haven't been reviewed for some time?

For electrical contractors and construction businesses across Adelaide and regional South Australia, managing electrical safety involves more than holding the right qualifications.

Workers need the skills, knowledge and equipment to respond safely when something goes wrong. Businesses also need to understand which training applies to different roles, how often competencies should be reviewed and what records should be maintained.

From Low Voltage Rescue (LVR) and CPR to workplace First Aid and Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) training, here's what South Australian businesses should consider.

Electrical Safety Training Adelaide: What Does Your Team Need?

Not every electrical worker requires the same training.

An electrician working on a commercial construction site may have different responsibilities from an apprentice, safety observer or worker operating within an electricity supply environment.

Training requirements depend on the work being performed, the risks involved and applicable legislation, industry standards and workplace procedures.

Four nationally recognised units are particularly relevant to electrical and construction businesses.

UETDRMP018 – Low Voltage Rescue Training

UETDRMP018 – Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel is the current nationally recognised unit for performing a rescue from a live low voltage panel.

It supersedes UETDRMP007.

The unit covers practical rescue procedures, including:

  • Identifying hazards and assessing risks.

  • Locating the electrical isolation point.

  • Inspecting and using rescue equipment and personal protective equipment.

  • Safely removing a casualty from a live low voltage panel.

  • Assessing the casualty following rescue.

  • Securing the incident area and completing required reporting.

HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the prerequisite for UETDRMP018.

LVR training is particularly relevant for workers who may be required to perform a rescue, including electricians, apprentices and designated safety observers.

The specific training requirements should be determined by the worker's duties and the electrical risks involved.

HLTAID009 – CPR Training for Electrical Workers

HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation develops the skills and knowledge required to respond to a person who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.

Training includes:

  • Recognising an emergency and following DRSABCD.

  • Performing CPR.

  • Using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

  • Responding to an emergency until further assistance arrives.

CPR training is generally recommended for renewal every 12 months.

For relevant energised electrical work, the Managing Electrical Risks in the Workplace Code of Practice also addresses the requirement for safety observers to have been assessed as competent in rescue and resuscitation within the previous 12 months.

At Safe Hands SA, we offer combined LVR and CPR training so electrical teams can complete both units in one session, with the prerequisite completed before LVR assessment.

HLTAID011 – First Aid Training for Construction Teams

HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid provides broader emergency response skills beyond CPR.

For construction businesses, this can be particularly important where workers may encounter injuries associated with tools, machinery, falls, manual tasks or changing site conditions.

Training covers:

  • CPR and AED use.

  • Bleeding and wound management.

  • Fractures and other injuries.

  • Burns and shock.

  • Asthma and anaphylaxis.

  • Recognising and responding to medical emergencies.

The First Aid requirements for a construction site depend on the workplace risk assessment, number of workers, location and access to emergency services.

Some principal contractors and projects may also specify additional training requirements.

For most workplaces, the nationally recognised First Aid qualification is generally refreshed every three years, with CPR refreshed annually.

UETDRMP010 – First Aid in an ESI Environment

UETDRMP010 – Provide First Aid in an ESI Environment is designed for First Aid response in electricity supply industry environments.

It is relevant to workers whose roles require ESI-specific emergency response skills.

Training addresses the hazards and emergency procedures associated with electrical supply work, including responding to electrical incidents and managing injuries in accordance with workplace requirements.

Not every electrician requires ESI First Aid.

Employers should review the duties being performed, applicable industry requirements and contractual obligations to determine whether this unit is appropriate.

Safe Hands SA can help businesses identify suitable training options for their teams.

What Does AS/NZS 4836:2023 Mean for Electrical Businesses?

AS/NZS 4836:2023 – Safe working on or near low-voltage and extra-low voltage electrical installations and equipment provides guidance on managing electrical hazards and implementing safe working practices.

It addresses matters including risk assessment, safe work procedures, personal protective equipment and emergency preparedness.

Alongside applicable WHS legislation and electrical safety requirements, the standard provides an important reference for businesses reviewing their systems of work.

For electrical contractors, this means considering more than whether employees have attended a course.

Questions worth asking include:

  • Do workers understand the hazards associated with their tasks?

  • Are rescue procedures appropriate for the work being undertaken?

  • Is suitable rescue equipment available and maintained?

  • Have workers and safety observers been assessed as competent for their responsibilities?

  • Are training and assessment records accessible?

  • Do workplace procedures reflect the risks of the actual work environment?

A certificate is one part of demonstrating competency. It doesn't replace appropriate supervision, risk assessments or safe systems of work.

Why Construction Sites Need Practical Emergency Response Training

Electrical and construction sites can present additional challenges, particularly where several contractors are working together.

Temporary electrical installations, changing work areas, equipment movement and varying levels of experience all need to be considered when planning emergency responses.

For apprentices and less experienced workers, understanding their role during an emergency is especially important.

Practical training gives workers the opportunity to rehearse procedures, ask questions and recognise the limitations of their responsibilities.

The goal isn't simply to remember what to do during an assessment. It's to understand what to do when the situation is real.

Practical Training, Not Just a Certificate

At Safe Hands SA, we deliver contextualised training for electrical and construction businesses.

Our approach focuses on practical skills and workplace-relevant discussions, including:

  • Simulated low voltage rescue procedures.

  • CPR and AED practice.

  • Responding to workplace injuries and medical emergencies.

  • Understanding the responsibilities of safety observers.

  • Discussing site-specific hazards and emergency procedures.

We work with experienced electricians, apprentices and mixed-experience teams, adapting discussions and scenarios to their working environments.

Nationally recognised training is supported by same-day certificates following successful completion of all course requirements.

Is CITB Funding Available?

Safe Hands SA is a CITB Endorsed Training Provider.

Eligible construction industry workers may be able to access subsidised training for relevant First Aid, CPR and Low Voltage Rescue courses.

For eligible participants, our combined LVR and CPR training may be fully subsidised.

Eligibility must be confirmed before training, and funding is subject to CITB requirements and availability.

We can assist with eligibility checks and the associated administration.

  • HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid.

  • UETDRMP010 – Provide First Aid in an ESI Environment.

We can also discuss scheduling different courses together where your team has several training requirements.

Electrical Training Compliance: A Quick Self-Check

Before organising your next refresher, consider:

  • Have you identified which workers require LVR training?

  • Have safety observers been assessed as competent in rescue and resuscitation within the required timeframe?

  • Is CPR training current?

  • Does your workplace require additional First Aid or ESI-specific training?

  • Are rescue kits and emergency equipment inspected and accessible?

  • Can you readily access staff training and assessment records?

  • Do your procedures reflect the work your team actually performs?

If any of these questions are difficult to answer, it may be time to review your training arrangements.

Planning Your Electrical Team's Training?

Electrical safety isn't simply about keeping certificates on file.

It's about ensuring workers understand their responsibilities, can recognise hazards and have the practical skills to respond appropriately in an emergency.

Safe Hands SA provides on-site LVR, CPR, First Aid and ESI training for electrical and construction businesses across Adelaide and regional South Australia.
