Why Workplace Fall Prevention Matters
Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common causes of workplace injuries in Australia. According to Safe Work Australia, every business has a WHS responsibility to identify and control hazards that could lead to a fall. This applies whether you are on a construction site, in an office, or at a cellar door.
These incidents are not merely “bad luck.” They often indicate poor housekeeping, inattention, or a lack of maintenance. Effective workplace fall prevention relies on simple awareness and consistent action.
🧰 Workplace Fall Prevention – Practical WHS Actions

For All Staff
Wipe up spills immediately and place signage.
Keep walkways and stairs clear of clutter.
Report any damaged flooring or poor lighting.
Wear footwear suitable for the surface and environment.
Participate in regular toolbox/team talks on site safety.
For Managers and Supervisors
Conduct regular inspections and housekeeping checks.
Ensure cleaning equipment and signage are accessible.
Provide non-slip mats in high-risk areas.
Address hazards reported by staff promptly.
Discuss slips, trips, and falls during induction and training refreshers.
These steps help meet your obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act 2012 (SA). They are easy to implement in any workplace.
🩹 First Aid for Slips, Trips, and Falls
If a worker falls or is injured, follow these steps:
1️⃣ Check for danger — ensure the area is safe before assisting.
2️⃣ Check for response and breathing.
If unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED following ARC DRSABCD.
3️⃣ Call 000 if the person is in severe pain, confused, or cannot move safely.
4️⃣ Do not move them if you suspect a head, neck, or back injury.
5️⃣ Provide basic first aid:
Use the RICE method – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
Clean minor wounds and cover them with a sterile dressing.
Monitor for shock (pale, cool, clammy skin or rapid breathing).
Record the incident, review what caused it, and discuss improvements at your next toolbox/team talk.
🧾 Workplace Fall Prevention Checklist
To ensure a safe workplace, consider the following checklist:
✅ Are walkways and stairs free from clutter?
✅ Are spills cleaned up immediately?
✅ Is lighting adequate throughout the workplace?
✅ Are floors, mats, and handrails maintained?
✅ Are first aid kits stocked and accessible?
✅ Do workers know how to report hazards?
If you want a team that’s prepared, confident, and up to date, don’t wait for the next incident to start the conversation.
